We Can Lead Applauds President Obama's Commitment to Clean Energy Jobs & Comprehensive Climate and Energy Legislation

January 27, 2009 - WASHINGTON, D.C. - We Can Lead, a network of over 150 companies and top business leaders from 30 states, issued this statement regarding President Obama's comments on the passage of comprehensive energy and climate legislation:

"Tonight, President Obama stressed the importance of creating new American jobs through proposals including the passage of comprehensive energy and climate legislation that will help American businesses invest in the transition to a new energy economy, create millions of new American jobs over the next decade, and enhance U.S. competitiveness.

"We applaud the President's commitment and look forward to working with the Administration and Congress to promote American job creation and enhance the ability of American companies to compete in the global race to lead the new energy economy."

Last week, We Can Lead sent a letter to President Obama and Members of Congress calling on them to move quickly to enact comprehensive climate and energy legislation that will create jobs, increase our energy independence, and enhance U.S. competitiveness. The letter has been signed by 89 U.S CEOs from some of the nation's largest electric power, manufacturing, clean tech, technology and consumer facing companies. We Can Lead added further pressure to the Members of Congress by airing a TV ad featuring American business leaders who support job creation through passage of comprehensive energy and climate legislation. The ad began in the Washington, D.C. market on the Sunday show programs, continuing through President Obama's State of the Union and into the weekend. Stating that "Now, it is the Senate's turn to act," the business leaders voice support for passing comprehensive energy and climate legislation which will create 1.7 million new American jobs. The ad, paid for by the Clean Economy Network, Inc., can also be viewed at wecanlead.org.

Business leaders from 150 companies from 30 states across the country joined the We Can Lead effort and traveled to Washington in early October 2009 to meet with Administration officials and more than 50 members of Congress to urge passage of comprehensive energy and climate legislation. We Can Lead continues to advocate for passage of comprehensive legislation that includes a price on carbon to spur American innovation, unleash U.S. investment, create millions of new jobs, restore America's competitiveness and provide for economic and national security.
